Canoeing on the Batsto River in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey is a good beginner's trip. There is no whitewater but the beginning of the trip is filled with lots of twists and turns... ...which forces the beginner to learn how to turn and maneuver a canoe quickly. Just ask Diane who earned several nicknames, including "Zig Zag", "Crash", and "Splash" and who caused Sharon to get the nickname "Tree Eater". Frank and Bill had no trouble, they were paddlers who had done this before. Our fearless leader getting some paddling help from Kevin. Joe was guarding the cooler and passing out the snacks. The turtles did not know what to make out of Sharon and Diane's crashes into trees and the banks of the river. The Water-Lilies (like the one shown above) and the Yellow Pond-Lilies were blooming. They could be found throughout Batsto Lake. A great day in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey! |
